Mango, from the Anacardiaceae family (species Mangifera indica), is native to South Asia and widely grown in tropical climates like East Africa. The mango tree grows between 10 to 40 meters tall, with a trunk diameter ranging from 0.5 to 1 meter, its dense, rounded canopy is filled with leathery, evergreen leaves measuring 15 to 35 cm long, arranged alternately on the branches. The fruit is oval, with smooth skin that ripens from green to golden yellow, enclosing juicy golden flesh and a large flat seed. Mangoes are rich in vitamins C, A, and E, plus fiber and antioxidants, supporting immunity, vision, digestion, and skin health. Commonly enjoyed fresh, they also feature in juices, smoothies, chutneys, and desserts. Unripe mangoes ripen best at room temperature; ripe ones can be refrigerated for up to five days. Mango leaves are also used in traditional medicine, and the seed yields a butter valued in skincare.
