Coconut

Fr 3.700

Coconut, from the Arecaceae family (species Cocos nucifera) is native to tropical coastal regions of the Indo-Pacific. The coconut palm grows tall and slender, reaching 20 to 30 meters high with a single trunk abou 30-50 cm thick and feather-like fronds measuring 4 to 6 meters long. The fruit has a fibrous husk encasing a hard shell that protects white flesh and nutrient-rich water. Coconuts are a source of healthy fats, manganese, copper, selenium, and electrolytes like potassium, aiding energy, bone health, and hydration. The tender flesh is eaten fresh, grated into dishes, or pressed into milk and oil, while the water is consumed as a natural sports drink. Whole coconuts keep well at room temperature; grated flesh or milk should be refrigerated. Nearly every part of the palm is used – leaves for weaving, husks for coir, and oil for culinary, cosmetic, and therapeutic use.
